INTENSE pulsed light or IPL is the technology used in laser hair removal. Before this technology was developed, the method that could almost parallel what laser hair removal does was electrolysis an waxing.

To put it bluntly, this light, are intense pulses of non-coherent light distributed over a range of wavelengths. The wavelengths vary fro visible light to near-infrared radiation. The lights are being applied to the skin by using a wand-like device. By triggering the light, shooting it on the skin, the light then hits the skin, goes right through it and into the hair shaft. The light is converted into heat energy and when it hits the hair shafts, it is destroyed, thus hampering hair growth.
